Road rage and stabbing incident under investigation in Sarasota

SARASOTA, Fla. -- Nov. 7, 2014 -- 8:30 a.m.

Steven Walters, 50, of Longboat Key, has been charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and tampering with evidence, both felony charges, following Thursday’s road rage stabbing incident in Sarasota.

Sarasota Police officers responded to the parking lot of 3800 South Tamiami Trail in Sarasota in reference a fight at approximately 2:20 p.m.  While on the way, officers were advised by dispatch that one of the parties involved in the fight had been stabbed. 

Once on scene, officers were advised by the victim, Michael Gatz, 41, of Sarasota, that he had some sort of road rage incident with Walters and Walters began hitting Gatz in the face.

SARASOTA, Fla. -- Nov. 6, 2014 -- 6 p.m.

The Sarasota Police Department is currently investigating a stabbing that occurred shortly before 3pm on Thursday, November 6, 2014, near the intersection of Bee Ridge Road and US 41 (S Tamiami Trail) in Sarasota.


Officers responded to a road rage incident that started when two men involved were in their vehicles.  One individual spoke to another and the two men then met in the parking lot of Paradise Plaza in front of Petco. 

Both men exited their vehicles and began to fist fight and that was when the suspect produced a knife and began slashing at the victim and stabbed/slashed his face several times. 

The suspect fled the area and was apprehended near the south side of Paradise Plaza by Sarasota Police officers.

The victim was taken by Bayflight Medical helicopter to a local hospital with facial injuries from the stabbing and the suspect was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital with injuries sustained in the fight.

The investigation continues.
