4 search warrants result in arrests, seizure of spice, cash & firearms

SARASOTA, Fla. – Dec. 2, 2014 – 8:30 a.m.

Investigations of the illegal sale of designer drugs have resulted in the execution of four search warrants at stores within the City of Sarasota over the last several months.

"These are very significant undercover operations," said Lt. James Rieser, Criminal Investigations Division, Sarasota Police Department. "These search warrants are extremely important because designer drugs are one of our biggest challenges currently."

On June 6, 2014, the Sarasota Police Department Narcotics Unit executed a search warrant at Snacks, 1950 MLK Jr. Way, Sarasota, resulting in the arrest of one male subject. As a result of this search warrant, 395 packages of designer drugs (also known as ‘spice’) were seized, $937 in US currency and a small silver .25 Colt semi-automatic firearm. Detectives executed a second search warrant at Snack’s on November 14, 2014 as the illegal activity continued at this location. A second warrant resulted in the arrest of the same male subject and the seizure of an additional 72 packages of designer drugs, $861 US currency and the city seizure of a 2010 BMW 328i.

On October 28, 2014, the Sarasota Police Department Narcotics Unit executed a search warrant at the Marathon Station, 2000 N. Washington Boulevard, Sarasota. One male subject was arrested as a result of the investigation. Detectives seized 193 packages of designer drugs and $1,050 US currency.

On Tuesday, November 25, 2014, the Sarasota Police Department Narcotics Unit, with the assistance of the Street Crimes Unit and Patrol Division, executed a search warrant at King’s Meat Market, 1810 MLK Jr. Way, Sarasota. The warrant was a result of an ongoing investigation of the sale of illegal designer drugs from the store. As a result of this search warrant, detectives seized 12 packages of designer drugs, $1,860 US currency and a 12-gauge shotgun. This investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made at this time.
