Sarasota Police Detectives Looking to Identify Vehicle Burglar Caught on Camera

SARASOTA, Fla. – April 18, 2014 – 2:45 p.m.

On Monday, April 14th at approximately 11:49 p.m., a man on a bicycle is seen on camera riding in the 2600 block of Nancy Street in Sarasota.  In the video (which can be viewed at http://youtu.be/XX24TAI0Z80), the man rides his bicycle past a home, turns around, parks the bicycle at the edge of the driveway and walks through a neighboring yard, into the garage area.

The man is then seen walking out of the garage area; He walks down the drive way and across the street to another home.  In a different camera angle from the home across the street, you can see the man walk up to a vehicle, pull on the door handle and then walk away.

A victim called officers on the morning of Tuesday, April 15 and told them that when she walked out to her vehicle she observed the driver’s door, rear left door and the hatchback were open.  Inside the vehicle, the glove compartment and center console were open and then contents were scattered in the vehicle.  Clothing the victim had just purchased was stolen from the vehicle which was unlocked at the time of the burglary.

“We want to encourage residents and visitors in Sarasota to lock it up.  Locking and securing your vehicles, homes and patios are crucial.  Don’t make a crime of opportunity easy for a criminal by not locking up,” said Lt. Pat Ledwith, Criminal Investigations Division, Sarasota Police Department.
