Felony arrest results in more than 60 grams of marijuana seized near city park

SARASOTA, Fla. – June 17, 2014 – 2 p.m.

On Wednesday, June 11, 2014, detectives with the Sarasota Police Department alerted patrol officers of drug activity in Fredd Atkins Park, 2581 Washington Court, Sarasota. The information detectives received about the drug activity was from a third party.

When officers arrived at Fredd Atkins Park at approximately 4:10 p.m., officers detained the suspect based on information from detectives. During a search of the suspect, officers located two nylon bag sunglass holders filled with marijuana in small "dime" size baggies and a clear baggie of "loose" marijuana. Total amount of marijuana was 63.1 grams.

"Addressing the flagrant sale of illegal substances in and around our public parks is one of the several strategies we are using to eliminate open air drug markets from our neighborhoods, with the ultimate goal of returning public spaces to law-abiding citizens," said Lt. Pat Ledwith, Commander, Criminal Investigation Division.

Since May 2013, the Sarasota Police Department has made 37 arrests in the area of Fredd Atkins Park. Al Jenkins, 48, of 5770 Beneva Road, was charged with felony possession of marijuana with intent to sell within 1000 feet of a park.
