SARASOTA, Fla. – November 16, 2015 – 9 a.m.
Every year, the Thanksgiving holiday is one of the busiest travels times. Millions of Americans hit the road to spend time with family and friends. The Sarasota Police Department will be joining law enforcement agencies from around the state of Florida and the country to step up ‘Click It or Ticket’ activities during the Thanksgiving holiday. Research has shown that lap/shoulder seat belts, when used, reduce the risk of fatal injury to front-seat passenger car occupants by 45% and the risk of moderate-to-critical injury by 50%.
"If you’re driving to the grocery store, a friend’s house a mile away or your grandparents house across the country, please buckle up this Thanksgiving and every time you’re on the road," said Sarasota Police Patrol Captain Kevin Stiff. "Drivers who fail to heed the warning are taking too big of a risk, a hefty fine or worse: dying in a crash," said Captain Stiff.
Tuesday, November 17th through Monday, November 30th, Sarasota Police officers will increase patrol officers to look for impaired or intoxicated drivers, seat belt and child restraint violations, aggressive drivers, speeding violations, texting violations and every day traffic violations.
Seat belts are the most effective safety feature invented and have helped to save thousands of lives. Sadly, one in five Americans fail to wear a seat belt regularly when driving or riding in a motor vehicle. The Sarasota Police Department continues to take part in the national ‘Click It or Ticket’ campaign to continue efforts to reduce traffic crash fatalities on the roads of the City of Sarasota.
