Suspect who escaped police facing charges of escape & resisting law enforcement

SARASOTA, Fla. – July 30, 2015 – 10:30 a.m.

On Wednesday, July 29, 2015, Johnny J. Rodriguez-Morel, 36, of 510 Audubon Place, called Sarasota Police to report a theft shortly before 11 p.m. When Officers arrived, they found out Rodriguez-Morel was wanted by the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office for assault.

Officers placed Rodriguez-Morel under arrest, handcuffing his hands behind his back. He was facing a patrol car and as Officers began to search for any possible weapons, he kicked off his sandals and broke free of the Officer’s grip.

Rodriguez-Morel began running westbound from 510 Audubon Place while Officers were attempting to get him to stop. He was able to break free and continued to run from Officers. He got behind a shed and slipped through a break in a fence and gained distance.

Officers set up a perimeter and K-9 in an attempt to locate Rodriguez-Morel. Multiple Officers did a canvass search over multiple properties and vacant lots in the area. Rodriguez-Morel was found hiding in a vehicle shortly before 2:30 a.m.

Rodriguez-Morel has been charged with Escape (felony) and Resisting a Law Enforcement Officer without Violence (misdemeanor). He remains in the Sarasota County Jail.
