SARASOTA, Fla. – August 14, 2015 – 8:30 a.m.
On Monday, August 10, 2015, a victim and her 13-year-old son were home in the 2200 block of Wisteria Street, Sarasota at approximately 9:30 p.m. The victim was asleep and her son was on the computer in the home office. The son told Sarasota Police Officers he was startled when a black male opened the door to the office he was in. The male told the son, "stay here" and pulled the door closed. The son heard movement and talking and approximately an hour later, after the movement and talking had ended, the son called 911 and Officers responded.
Investigation determined the suspect was able to gain entry into the home through an unlocked rear screen lanai. Once inside, the suspect removed four pieces of glass from a jalousie door. The suspect was able to unlock the door and gain entry. A TV, DVD player, XBox1, XBox360, Kindle Fire, XBox1 Controllers, HDMI cord, Lisabella wine, Cool Ranch Doritos, bottle of Gatorade and half a Subway sandwich were taken.
On Tuesday, while Detective Kim Laster was conducting follow up investigation, Patrol Officer Jason Frank assisted with canvassing the area, in search of the missing window panes and any other evidence. Officer Frank located the window panes, matching those belonging to the door where entry was made, in a trashcan across the street. The home where the trashcan was located was at a home that is currently vacant.
While inspecting the vacant home, Officer Frank observed a rear glass door, which leads into the garage, unlocked. Inside the garage was a bicycle and on storage shelves in the garage, a TV, DVD player, XBox and a plastic bin with various games and a Kindle Fire. All items matched the ones stolen from across the street.
While conducting a security inspection of the rest of the vacant home, Detective Laster and Officer Frank located Braxton L. Morgan, 27, in a room with Morgan. He was taken into custody without incident. An empty Subway bag, a Gatorade bottle, a corked bottle of Lisabella wine and Cool Ranch Doritos were also located in the room. Morgan has been charged with felony Burglary of a Dwelling, Occupied and Trespassing an unoccupied residence.
