SARASOTA, Fla. – August 4, 2015 – 9 a.m.
The Sarasota Police Department is teaming up with 7-Eleven once again to celebrate a generation of good behavior. For 20 years, Police Officers in the United States have been “ticketing” kids with Operation Chill® Free Slurpee® drink coupons.
The program started in Philadelphia to give law enforcement officers a positive reason to interact with children and teens. Through Operation Chill®, law enforcement officers can “ticket” kids caught in the act of doing good with Slurpee® beverage coupons. Appropriate “offenses” might include helping another person, deterring crime or taking part in a positive activity in the community. Each coupon can be redeemed for a small Slurpee drink at participating 7-Eleven stores.
Since the program’s inception in 1995, nearly 14 million Operation Chill coupons have been distributed to hundreds of law enforcement agencies across the county. During 2015, 1.25 million coupons will be issued nationally during the summer months and back-to-school season.
“These coupons are great for our Officers who patrol in our community,” said Captain Kevin Stiff, Patrol Division, Sarasota Police Department. “It’s a way to encourage positive relationships between the youth in the City of Sarasota and our Officers. Our Patrol Officers, Crime Prevention Officers and School Resource Officers all have coupons to hand out,” said Stiff.
