SARASOTA, Fla. -- August 1, 2016 -- 10:30 a.m.
From late April 2016 until July 2016, various subjects from the south Florida area were traveling to the Sarasota area attempting to obtain controlled substance medications by manufacturing and passing fraudulent prescriptions to local pharmacies including Walgreens, Publix, CVS and WalMart. Only one pharmacy filled the prescription, the others recognized it as fraudulent.
The subjects would use blank prescription forms, list fictitious patient names and list actual names of physicians in the area. The controlled substance on the blank prescription forms was Phenergen/Codeine (cough syrup), which is a schedule V controlled substance.
Thanks to several alert pharmacists, Detectives with the Sarasota Police Department were contacted as these crimes were happening. As a result, three suspects have been arrested and charged with a total of 36 felony charges and 1 misdemeanor charge.
