Sarasota Police to voluntarily wear pink badges, shrouds or pins for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

SARASOTA, FL. – September 30, 2016   – 12 p.m.

The Sarasota Police Department is Going Pink!  October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Officers with the Sarasota Police Department are working to raise breast cancer awareness.

To show support for women and men fighting breast cancer and remember those who have passed away, Officers
have been authorized by Chief Bernadette DiPino to show their support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month by voluntarily wearing a pink badge, pink pin or a pink shroud.

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, exceeded only by lung cancer.  Death rates from breast cancer have been declining since about 1989, with larger decreases in women younger than 50.  These decreases are believed to be the result of earlier detection through screening and increased awareness, as well as improved treatment.
