Sarasota Police Officers begin wearing Community Policing medals

SARASOTA, Fla. -- April 7, 2017 -- 12:30 p.m.

In October 2016, the Sarasota Police Department was chosen as one of six law enforcement agencies internationally as a finalist for the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP)/Cisco Community Policing Award.  Each entry demonstrated the meaningful change that can occur when law enforcement officials and their communities utilize available resources for crime prevention and improvement of quality of life.

To honor the finalist recognition, Chief Bernadette DiPino presented all Sarasota Police Department officers with a “Community Policing” medal to wear on their uniform (see attached photo).  The wearing of the medal will be mandatory for each officer until midnight January 1, 2018.  After January 1, 2018, wearing of the medal can be optional and at the discretion of each officer.

“Being chosen as a finalist recognized the hard work and dedication to developing trust and building relationships with our community,” said Chief Bernadette DiPino.  “It was a great honor to be chosen as a finalist.  I’m so proud of our officers.”
