Two Sarasota Police Officers Injured During Proactive Patrol

SARASOTA, FL  – April 10, 2018   – 11:30 a.m.

The Sarasota Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred at approximately 1 a.m. on Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at Janie’s Garden Apartment Complex, 2350 Central Avenue, Sarasota.  Two patrol officers, in full Sarasota Police uniforms, were on proactive patrol in the area.

The Officers noticed a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot occupied by three (3) adult males.  As Officers approached the vehicle to investigate, the vehicle immediately shifted into drive and started to drive away, striking one of the Officers as it fled.  As the vehicle struck the Officer, he discharged his weapon at the vehicle.  The number of shots fired and the location of the shots fired is still under investigation.  The vehicle fled the scene and drove to Sarasota Memorial Hospital. 

Two of the three individuals inside the vehicle sustained non-life threatening injuries as a result of the encounter.  Both Officers were transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries as a result of the encounter.

The Patrol Officers involved were Officer Brandon Vermillion, age 28, date of hire November 2015 and Officer Jonathan Torres, age 32, date of hire June 2017.  Per Sarasota Police Department policy, Officer Vermillion, who fired his weapon, is on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. 

This investigation remains active and ongoing.  The driver of the vehicle, Jeremy Trebbles, Jr, 18 of Sarasota, has been charged with one count of Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon on a Law Enforcement Officer.
