Sarasota Police Investigating Human Remains Located in the 1900 block of Gillespie Avenue

SARASOTA, FL  – April 17, 2018   – 1:15 p.m.

This afternoon, the District 12 Medical Examiner’s Office, working with a Forensic Odontologist, determined through dental records that human remains located in the 1900 block of Gillespie Avenue, Sarasota, on Monday afternoon are NOT those of Jabez Spann.  Spann has been missing since September 2017.

The human remains that were located were a human skull and a femur bone.  At this time, there is no evidence to support foul play in this case.  There is no early indication of the identity, race, sex or age of the individual.  This information could take several weeks to be determined by a Forensic Anthropologist working with the District 12 Medical Examiner’s Office.

This investigation will be worked as a death investigation moving forward.  No further updates on this case are expected for the remainder of this week.

SARASOTA, FL  – April 17, 2018   – 10 a.m.

On Monday, April 16, 2018 at approximately 3:30 p.m., human remains were located in the 1900 block of Gillespie Avenue, Sarasota.  Children playing nearby located the remains, alerted an adult and the adult called 911.

New this morning, the Sarasota Police Department is continuing to work with the District 12 Medical Examiner’s Office, providing any additional evidence or documentation to assist with the ME’s processing of the human remains.  Regarding what type of human remains were located, the Sarasota Police Department is not prepared to disclose that information at this time because evidence is still being processed.

The human remains were located in a small body of water and were skeletonized.  Sarasota Police Detectives are unable to put a timetable on how long they were in in the water. 

The Sarasota Police Department contacted Peace River K9 Search and Rescue for their assistance.  They responded with three (3) K9 cadaver teams and were able to assist in a search of the area.

There is no time table currently for the identification of the remains.  The Medical Examiner’s Office will make the determination as to the identity of the individual located.

SARASOTA, FL  – April 16, 2018   – 8 p.m.

The Sarasota Police Department and the District 12 Medical Examiner’s Office is investigating human remains that were located in the 1900 block of Gillespie Avenue, Sarasota.

Today, Monday, April 16, 2018, at approximately 3:30 p.m., children playing near a small body of water in the 1900 block of Gillespie Avenue located what they believed to be human remains.  The children alerted an adult nearby.  The adult called 911.

The Sarasota Police Department Dive Team responded to search the small body of water and collect evidence.  Detectives with the Criminal Investigations Division and Crime Scene Technicians responded to collect and photograph evidence.

Shortly after 7 p.m., the District 12 Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the remains found were human remains.  At this time, it’s too early in the investigation for the Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the race, sex or age of the individual.  The investigation remains ongoing.
