Three of Four Teenagers Suspected in Assault of Off-Duty Sarasota Officer Arrested

FEBRUARY 19, 2019:  Three teenagers have been arrested in connection to the assault of an off-duty Sarasota Police Officer on February 7, 2019.  Two teenagers were arrested this morning and a third teenager was arrested on February 8, 2019.

  • Scott Lunt, 16, of Sarasota  (Arrested 2/8/2019)
    • Charge:  Felony Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer

  • Dexter Williams, 15, of Sarasota   (Arrested 2/19/2019)
    • Charge:  Felony Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer

  • Alexavier Lewis, 16, of Sarasota  (Arrested 2/19/2019)
    • Charge:  Felony Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer

Per F.S.S. 985.04 (2) (a) 1., information about juveniles charged with felonies is public record.  This remains an active and ongoing investigation.  Detectives are continuing their search for a fourth suspect.  Originally, it was believed five suspects were involved but after multiple interviews, Detectives believe only four individuals were involved.

On February 7, 2019, just after 12 p.m., an off-duty Sarasota Police officer was jogging at Payne Park, 2050 Adams Lane, Sarasota, when he noticed a homeless individual being harassed, pushed and hit by a group of teenagers.

The off-duty Officer identified himself as a Sarasota Police Officer and told the teenagers to stop.  The teenagers stopped harassing the individual and turned their aggression onto the off-duty Officer, striking him several times and injuring him before leaving the area.  The Officer had minor injuries.  Both the Officer and original victim are doing well.
