Post Date:12/06/2019 8:16 AM

The Sarasota Housing Authority, Sarasota Police Department, Target and Sarasota County Area Transit (SCAT) are partnering for the eighth year to provide 100 underprivileged children with a unique holiday experience in Sarasota.

‘Shop with a Cop’ pairs 100 local underprivileged children with local law enforcement to shop for holiday gifts at a local Target store.

The event will be held Friday, December 13, 2019 from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at the Target located at 5350 Fruitville Road, Sarasota.  **Media is welcome and invited to attend**

“Shop with a Cop is a great opportunity for children and police officers to get to know each other at a friendly event like buying Christmas presents for themselves and family members,” said Chief Bernadette DiPino.  “I’ve seen the generosity and heart of our officers, year after year, who reach into their own pockets to cover overages at the register.  The smiles I’ve seen on the faces of the children and our officers is priceless.  This is the true spirit of the holiday season.  Everyone leaves the event filled with joy and a lot of new friends,” said Chief DiPino.

“Having a safe and strong community begins with having mutual trust and respect between community members and the men and women sworn to protect them,” said Sarasota Housing Authority CEO William Russell. “‘Shop with a Cop’ builds positive relationships through this uplifting holiday event,” said Russell.

SHA raises more than $10,000 for this event through their 501c3 affiliate Sarasota Housing Funding Corporation.  This year’s event was made possible through donations by IBERIABANK, Saxon Gilmore & Carraway, P.A., Sarasota Ford, Burn Boot Camp Sarasota, Sarasota Memorial Hospital’s Department of Public Safety, Gary Dornbush, and other private donors.  Donations raised provides Target gift cards Officers will use at checkout for each of the 100 children.
