Fatal crash on Longboat Key under investigation
The Sarasota Police Department Traffic Unit is investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash that happened on Longboat Key on Wednesday, December 18, 2019 at approximately 6 p.m. The Sarasota Police Department has a memorandum of understanding with the Town of Longboat Key to assist with any serious or fatal crash investigations.
At approximately 6 p.m. Wednesday, a Tesla was driving onto Gulf of Mexico Drive from a private residence. A marked patrol vehicle from the Town of the Longboat Key Police Department was traveling south in the 2100 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive when it collided with the Tesla. A Longboat Key Police Officer, who was driving the patrol car, was working and was responding to a call at the time of the crash.
The driver of the vehicle, Charles Barancik, 91, of Longboat Key, was pronounced dead at the scene and the passenger, Charles’ wife, Margery Barancik, 83, of Longboat Key, was transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital as a trauma alert with serious injuries. The Town of the Longboat Key Police Department Officer, whose name is being withheld, was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
