Case Update: Man Sentenced to 40 Years for 2019 Shooting Involving Sarasota County Paramedics

SARASOTA — Tyran Young, 38, of Sarasota, has been sentenced to 40 years in prison followed by 20 years of probation for the 2019 shooting targeting Sarasota County Fire Department (SCFD) paramedics.

Young, now a thirteen-time convicted felon, was convicted of:
• Two counts of aggravated assault on a firefighter
• Shooting into a vehicle
• Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon
• Unlawful use of a two-way communications device
• Misuse of 911

On Jan. 7, 2019, SCFD paramedics responded to an automated 911 call at 2932 Goodrich Ave. claiming someone had fallen. When the residents said they hadn’t called, the paramedics returned to their ambulance and Young opened fire, striking the vehicle twice. No one was injured.

Detectives later determined Young staged the shooting and falsely blamed a juvenile relative, suggesting the youth was motivated by a family tragedy involving first responders. Investigators found Young’s cellphone searches mirrored the automated 911 message and linked him to a similar call in 2018, believed to be a “dry run.”

Young carried out the scheme to seek leniency on separate felony charges. He was set to begin a one-year prison sentence the day after the shooting. His prosecution, led by Assistant State Attorney William Greiner, was delayed for years by attempts to feign incompetence and self-representation tactics by Young.

After multiple hearings and failed delays, Young pleaded no contest to all charges on Aug. 11, 2025. Weeks later, he alleged he had been under duress at the time he entered his pleas and attempted to withdraw them. His motion to withdraw the pleas was denied after testimony and recordings showed he had acted strategically, not under duress.

The victims and the juvenile Young attempted to frame testified during the sentencing on Oct. 6, 2025. Afterward Assistant State Attorney Greiner said: “Tyran Young very much seems to think he is smarter than everyone else. However, considering he managed to get himself sentenced to forty years in prison for doing something to avoid serving one year in prison, everyone else is free to think otherwise.”

Young remains in the Sarasota County Jail awaiting transfer to the Florida Department of Corrections.
